Abstract:
Coverage contains locations of Farms, Stables and Nurseries in Westchester County. Farms and stables represent agricultural properties in agricultural production of not less than ten acres in operation in the preceding two years for the production of crops, livestock or use as a boarding stable for an average gross sales value of not less than $10,000 (as per NYS Agriculture and Markets Law, Article 25A, Circular 1150). In addition, inactive farms are included in the farm and stable category. Large nurseries are those facilties that are over 10 acres in size and usually grow horticultural specialties, including nursery stock, ornamental shrubs, ornamental trees and flowers. Retail Nurseries are facilities under 10 acres in size that sell horticultural plant material but do not grow plants on site.
The source for the farms, stables and nurseries is from the (1) Westchester County Major Open Space Map (1994); (2) agricultural inventories prepared by the Westchester County Soil and Water Conservation District in 1984 and revised in 1994, and 1999 (draft); (3) farms, stables or nurseries which receive a New York State Agricultural Assessment; (4) business directory yellow-pages.
