Description: The map service represents areas of Westchester County (New York) with a generally South-facing slope. First, a 25' interval contour data was created from the Spring 2000 countywide photogrammetric base map project. Building "footprints" were also used with Spring 2004 photography. The Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was produced using ESRI ArcGIS Spatial Analyst Extension software. The DEM data was then processed with the ArcGIS 3D Analyst\Surface Analysis extension to derive an "Aspect" map indicating the compass direction in degrees (°) of each modeled surface cell where North = 0, East = 90, South = 180, and West = 270. The "Aspect" map was reclassified to create a map which only shows the "southern exposure" cells for the compass direction from 157.5° to 202.6°. Using ArcGIS Desktop, southern exposure polygons were then "smoothed" around the edges for better cartographic representation. Finally, GIS software was used to identify both "southern exposure" polygons (highlighted in orange on the following map) which intersected with building footprints, as well as polygons over 0.11 acres in size which did not intersect building footprints.
